Fiber-optic communication systems

Department of Optic Communication of Far Eastern State Transport University offers course of modern optical communication technologies. It includes both theoretical and practical studies. Students get actual knowledge and basic skills on exploitation fiber-optics communication networks. Course length is two weeks.

Physical principles of light propagation in optical waveguide. Ray approximation. Modes. Kinds of optical fibers and techniques of producing.

Physical principles of light propagation in optical waveguide. Wave approximation. Material dispersion, intermode dispersion, fiber chromatic dispersion. Polarized light propagation in optical fiber.  Polarization mode dispersion. Fiber loss.

Optical signals transmission in optical fiber. Effect of dispersion and attenuation to length and speed of signals transmission. Principles of nonlinear fiber optics. Optical solitons.

Fiber connectors and other passive devices of optical fiber communications. Connection techniques for optical fibers. Welding of optical fibers. Evaluation of optical attenuation in welding.

Fiber optics communications measurements. Ways to connect fiber to the measuring instruments. The principle of optical testers. Attenuation measurement agents and splices. Determining the length of the cable. Determine the nature and distance to fault optical cable.

The principles of the fiber-optics reflectometry. Decoding technique traces. OTDR attenuation measurement of optical fibers. Distribution of inhomogeneity along the fiber-optic cable.
